Update - November 2001
GN Y-1 Electrics in N Scale
Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains was the most
difficult mountain crossing on the Great Northern, so tunnels were built
and the line was electrified to ease the burden on the locomotives and
crews. From 1926 to 1956, the bulk of the traffic through the
district was pulled by the Class Y and Z electrics.
Our (Oriental Ltd) models will be of the class Y locomotives, which were
numbered from 5010 to 5017. Initially, they were painted Pullman
Green and has the headlights mounted on the roof. Around 1940,
"automatic high voltage connectors" were added to the roofs, which moved
the headlights on top of the MU receptacles. The last modification
on the GN was to paint the class Y "motors" in the orange and green Empire
Builder scheme.
In 1956, all of the Y's were sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad, where they
continued to operate for a number of years. Modifications by the
Pennsy included the removal of the "bus bars" and blanking in the side
doors.
Our N scale models will be made by Korea Brass Co., Ltd. and will be
factory painted and lettered for each version and include directional
constant intensity lighting. Delivery is expect in mid 2002.

classic Union Pacific Big Boy articulated steam engines. These are
