THESE LITTLE 2-6-6-2s ON THE SP, #3930, AND #3931, WERE ORPHANS FROM THE "VERDE TUNNEL AND SMELTER RAILROAD" IN JEROME ARIZONA. THEY WERE PURCHASED DURING "THE BIG ONE…WW II" TO HELP EASE POWER SHORTAGES, AND SPENT ALMOST THEIR WHOLE SP CAREERS ON THE LOS ANGELES DIVISION HELPING ON BEAUMONT HILL, AND IN AND AROUND L.A. #3930 WAS THE LAST OF THE COMPOUND SP MALLETS TO OPERATE IN ACTIVE SERVICE AS THE "COLTON DRAG ENGINE" UNTIL 1954 WHEN IT WAS SCRAPPED. (#3931 SUCCUMBED IN 1951). THESE UNITS ORIGINALLY HAD A SMALLER SQUARE TENDER, LATER REBUILT INTO THE LARGER SQUARE TENDER PICTURED IN OUR OFFERINGS BELOW. #3930 WAS GIVEN A LARGE VANDY TENDER (FROM A SCRAPPED "5000"), AND WAS RETIRED WITH THIS TENDER (AS PICTURED IN DP-2425). WE WILL CATALOG BOTH THE "VANDY" TENDER AND THE REBUILT SQUARE TENDER FOR #3930 AND THE REBUILT SQUARE TENDER FOR #3931.
