HISTORY……That's what we're in this for, isn't it?? Animated history in model form. It's very important to us here at The Division Point. Last year we gave you the "FT...The diesel that did it!!"..wrested freight assignments from the might steam locomotive, and never looked back.. Our new project encompasses the first passenger diesels that actually pre-dated the "FTs" by several years. These first experimental "E units ("E" for eighteen hundred horsepower) were conceived in 1935 to pull the then envisioned streamliners on the drawing boards of several major passenger carrying railroads of the day, notably the Santa Fe and the Baltimore and Ohio. Santa Fe was just developing the "Super Chief" for service between Chicago and Los Angeles, and the B&O wanted to upgrade their "Capitol Limited" Between Chicago and Washington. The newly formed "Electromotive Division" of GMC, under the command of Richard Dilworth came through with some of the most beautiful and practical designs to ever burnish the rails. The first units, demonstrators, #511 and #512, were nothing more than a box around two EMC 201A V-12 diesel engines of 900HP each. The Santa Fe had wanted the streamlined E units for the new "Super Chief", but EMD was not finished with the design work, so Santa Fe settled for the demonstrators "dolled up" for the occasion by Sterling McDonald's EMD styling department. Fresh off their work on the DC-3 interiors, they conceived the design and color scheme for the "Super Chief's" first motive power, the #1 and #1A, nicknamed "Amos ‘N Andy" by the crews. Large "eyebrow" air scoops were added to each end of the units, and on this canvas they splashed Cobalt Blue, Olive Green and Sarasota Blue separated by stripes of Crimson and Tuscan Red…….."By God, Folks would notice this engine!!!" these two power units, along with the demo #510 painted Silver and lettered "Santa Fe" would power the new "Super Chief". When the new E units did come on line just one year later, the "Amos ‘N Andy" would later be rebuilt into the famous "Bulldog" series #1 and #10 for greater visibility and protection of their crews at grade crossings.
The Division Point will offer all of these important and historical models to our customers, from the very first demo units through the E-3 demonstrators that predated the future E unit production. These truly exciting prototypes operated schedules never to be repeated by the railroads (one run of "Amos ‘N Andy" actually hit 150 MPH!!). All this in 1935, long before the advent of "Bullet Trains" or "TGV’s"…..WOW !!!
The Division Point, and Ajin Precision of Korea, will bring you these beautiful prototypes from actual EMD blueprints, with all of the features and fidelity to detail you expect from us. "The Coach Yard" will be offering the 1938 "Chief", and the "San Diegan", both of which were pulled by later models of our streamlined E designs.
