Every railroad had classes of ubiquitous little locomotives that
served the humble tasks of pushing cars about in yards and industries,
assembling and breaking down arriving or departing passenger trains and moving
blocks of freight cars into proper position for loading or unloading or awaiting
subsequent call. In the instance of the Southern Pacific Railroad, the small
0-6-0 switching locomotives fulfilled the everyday tasks in the same manner as
their brethren on other railroads but, in the case of the SP, the passenger
station assigned switching locomotives received special care, loving attention,
and special color and detail features that were locally determined. Challenger
has chosen to model a series of these locomotives in their individual and
particular appearances.
